The "Contact Person" is the woman who commits
ahead of time to do the hike/bike and to collect the names of all who plan to attend. She makes sure the weekly e-mail
contains the pertinent information:
brief description (miles, elevation gain)
time required to drive to and from the trailhead
(if out of town)
shorter version option
special equipment needed
(bear bells, bear spray, tevas for stream crossing, cash)
dog restrictions
If the hike must be cancelled or altered, she makes
those decisions. She makes sure everyone who starts on the trail, exits the trail but is not responsible for dogs lost
on the trail. There are usually volunteers to stay behind to look for lost dogs.
The Contact Person usually leads the hike but occasionally
someone else is the leader on the trail. She arrives at the "Meeting Place" with a list of those who contacted her, a cell
phone (turned on) and a Happy Hiker directory. After initiating introductions and carpool arrangements, she decides when to
leave.
For Summer Hikes near Anchorage we meet at Glen Alps Parking
Lot or Prospect Parking Lot (see map below).
For hikes north of town
we meet at the west door (garden entrance) of the Muldoon Fred Meyer at the corner of DeBarr (15th St.) and Muldoon Road (Tudor).
For hikes south of town we
meet at Carrs Huffman or the Potter Mailboxes at the bottom of Potter Valley Rd., just beyond Potter's Marsh on the Seward
Highway.
